Make Anything, Not War PDF Print E-mail

Iraqi Veterans Against War is putting on a fundraiser by selling political artworks. Well, those who read my facebook page know I occasionally flip out when I can\'t handle that my tax money is going to kill people, especially those swarthy brownies that happen to look like me. For this show I\'m actually submitting a canvas print of a photo I took as documentation for a performance by  my dear friend Philippe Javier Garcesto. My hope now is to try and talk to the curators (Chere Krakovsky & Maya Joseph-Goteiner) and get Philippe to do a performance at the show. Oh, and from the look of the pic above this space seems gorgeous. It\'ll be at the PowerHouse Arena in Dumbo, Brooklyn with the opening reception on Saturday March 7th from 6-10pm with performances (hopefully Philippe is one) from 8-10pm.

Well, since my damn site was on the fritz I wasn\'t able to post this prior to the actual reception. But I have to say this was seriously one of the best show\'s I\'ve been in and wow, the gallery is mind blowing gorgeous. Props to Kenya Robinson, the curator and motivational force behind this show, for pulling everything together so well. It\'s still up until February 26. If you\'re in Jersey City then swing past and check out the diverse array of work that gives voice to the idea of beign AfricanAmericana.

Who knew a beat boxing sheikh could be so funny? The irony is that for those in the know, I\'ve got a pretty heavy accent when I recite the arabic alphabet. But once the flow starts going who cares! I\'m planning on being at the reception but don\'t expect any freestylin. Although much love and props to NY Studio Gallery.

The show is up until the 20th of December.

AGAST In Brooklyn! PDF Print E-mail

BAG Gallery (Brooklyn Artist Gym) is both having a show, BKLYN:111, and participating in the AGAST Studio Tour throughout their part of the city. Since BAG is part gallery and part communal studio space they\'re killing 2 birds with 1 stone. Now obvioulsy I don\'t have a studio in Brooklyn but they cool enough to consider Jersey, ahem, local enough to participate in the show. Michele Jaslow is the curator of this show and if it\'s anything like the prior one I was involved with it will surely please. She has the uncanny knack of unifying diverse pieces and mediums into a cohesive and eloquent show. The AGAST tour is October 18th (opening reception) and 19th while the BKLYN:111 reception is October 25, 2008.

Say What? PDF Print E-mail

For the past few months I\'ve been trying to get back into writing more than just gregarious emails and Facebook status updates. It\'s kinda tough because on the one hand I'm trying to push myself to be more 'academic' (whatever that means). Simultaneously, I don\'t ever want to go beyond what is natural for me in an effort to sound academic, instead of just being academic. With that said I have a written piece as part of show in the Sackler Education Center of The Guggenheim. Catherine Opie Selects: Pictures and Words is a good effort of bridging the visual with the literary and I'd expect the written part of the show to be quite varied. Considering I also enjoy photography as one of my preferred mediums this was I subject I felt I could really contribute to. It\'s up from September 26 to January 7, 2009.
