For those who know or have noticed I tend to focus my art objects around the narratives of issues concerning Muslims. Or at least I use Islamic themes as my gimmick but it does tend to make sense considering, ahem, I'm one of them. But my interest in art goes far beyond just the creation of objects which is why I'm investing like the next decade of my life into the Art & Art Ed program at Teachers College. The idea of doing research into the uncharted territories of idenity and culture for the myriad of personalities that fall under the Islam umbrella is rather exciting!

At the beginning of January University of Colorado in Boulder is hosting a 4 day conference about Islam and the Media. This conference brings together a whole crazy array of heavy weights and new jacks (like myself) to discuss all sorts of topics relating to the above. I'm very lucky to have been selected to participate in the conference as a breakout presenter and am rather psych'd to give my little dog and pony show. My topic: The Birth of and Islamic American Identity Through Arts Rebellion.

Another Piece Sold! PDF Print E-mail

Ok, this must be some type of fluke. But honestly I could get used to this and can't even imagine making a living off of selling artwork. Recently I was involved in a reviewed competition for the Myers Art Award. Essentially each year Columbia University purchases new artwork into their collection and the competition is their process for review. I submitted a piece that was created literally less than a week before and they loved it. I actually submitted 2 pieces as per their limit and they informed me that the decision was hard between the two so BOTH pieces went up into the awards show and one never came home with me at the end of the show. For what it's worth, I love the idea of not schlepping artwork back home at the end of a show. It's all exciting to get it there, but the pick up after the show is a pain.

Back in the Game, And the Game is in CHELSEA! PDF Print E-mail

Since this is being written after the fact due to my wrecking my website (again) and rebuilding it like months after the event I'll cut to the chase. . .

I had a luvely quiet minimal art creation break over the summer and no gallery shows that I participated in. Come the autumn it was time to get things moving again with realizing some ideas that got cooked up during the down time and try to get back into the 'scene'. Luckily my tendency to network incessantly paid off and I nailed participation into a show at the Chelsea Art Museum. To put it simply, I had no idea what I was getting myself into until I rounded to corner on the night of the reception and saw a MOB about 1/2 way down the block. The place was literally packed, and it's a huge place, 3 stories of massive galleries and a rooftop. So this is how the rich kids live, eh?

Well the best part of the night was that MY PIECE SOLD!!! I got some great video footage of the chaos and people critiquing my work. And the satisfaction of knowing that my labor of love is hanging over somone's couch or bed somewhere in the world. Yay!

Radio Killed The Video Star PDF Print E-mail

Recently I was involved with something a bit different than the typical gallery scene. While it's not directly about art this radio interview captures a lot of my background motivations that encompass where my motivations for creating things come from. It was a bit of a surprise to end up doing this but as I like to live my life, bypass no opportunity because who knows what might come of it. American Public Media has 780 stations across the United States and this was for one of their national programs.

And beyond that, you should really have a listen to what the other interviewees have to speak about. Simply fascinating stuff.
